Today’s industry Friday was taken my managing director of fashion recruitment company DENZA. Emma Davison came to talk about the major do’s and dont’s of using a recruitment company such as themselves and how to go about getting a successful job in fashion. She worked for the company for 8 years before finally taking over the company from the founder. They predominantly recruit for fashion designers in menswear, womenswear and childrenswear.

CV Writing


  • Reading long cv’s is pointless unless its relevant
  • Date of birth doesn’t have to be given
  • Don’t write a narrative it doesn’t get read
  • Try to be brief and straight to the point
  • Include language and software skills
  • Focus on the position your applying for

Sending your CV 

  • Have a professional email address
  • subject line uni, grad year, name, Internships
  • Emails should take no longer than 30 seconds to read
  • Stick to the point
  • No jokes

The recruitment interview

  • Come prepared- CV, Swatches, Portfolio, pen and Note book
  • Relaxed but come presentable
  • keep portfolio up to date
  • They know the business and they will tell whats appropriate to wear to certain interviews with designers and companies
  • Explore other agencies
  • Don’t be pushed into a job you don’t want

The real interview 

  • Know what to wear
  • Research the company, stores, website and magazines spreads
  • Double check portfolio
  • Research the person interviewing you
  • Be polite and smiley

After the interview 

  • Email a brief note saying thank you and ask when you will be notified


  • Only have one
  • Tailor it to your client
  • 3 or 4 projects only
  • Chose work that is relevant
  • make it practical to look through
  • Dont make it heavy or awkward
  • Make sure its all your own work and if it isn’t make sure your have a note of it somewhere within
  • Keep updating
