Today Jonathan from G.H leathers a Northampton based leather merchant, came to talk to us about the company and what type of materials leathers and furs they supply and their prices.
As leather merchants they are very conscious of where they source there hides from and they always make sure they use buy product meaning the animal has already been killed for meat produce reason and they are given the result of the hair otherwise it would be used. this way they are not harming the animal for their own gain as the animal has been bread and killed for meat reason.
They use many different animals, mainly sheep and pig but also goat. Goat skin is on the highest quality leather and used by most designers. they also import Japanese cow hide as they are specially reared and messaged in their fields in order to achieve evenly spread fat across the cow. this effect makes their skin thinner and achieve the lightest, thinnest leather. They also use more specialist animals such as rabbit and Australian springbok.
I found this talk very useful to my fabric research in my FMP project and has given me ideas when looking for fabric now and in the future.
